A cough and a cold - A poem by Mekhala Charan

 A cough and a cold

It all started with a normal cough and cold

Well, nothing to worry about!

Best to be brave and bold

But suddenly, a hint of doubt...

Is it?-wait, no, it couldn’t be

Was something else inside of me?

That burn behind my eyes

Maybe a check would be wise?

No, I shall wait

Maybe this isn’t my fate

Oh, but 5 days gone

And I start to fawn

In a state of panic

I took the fever tonic

Ahh.. much better

Not too long, it was back, however

I decided to take the safety measure

It came back positive to my utmost terror

'I was near her, now I fear her', they chanted!

'Take her away!' , they demanded

None willing to take the risk

For it might make them sick

I was put in  bed alone

With the sickness I owned.

Oh, how I wish I hadn’t hesitated

To take the measure before it elevated.

Suddenly through the darkness, faces shown

It was the people who had me disowned

Though staggered and weak was my breath

I knew that it wouldn’t be my death
